Yarn
Knitting is back in fashion and our shelves show it. We carry yarn in a range of compositions and weights, and alongside it everything needed to work with it: needles, crochet hooks, darning needles and stitch markers. If you are just starting out, tell us what you want to make and we will help you pick the yarn and needle size.
Yarn
Acrylic, wool, cotton, viscose, microfibre and blends of these — in many colours and weights.
Acrylic is inexpensive, hard-wearing and easy to wash, which makes it good for learning and for children’s items. Wool is warmer and drapes better, but needs careful washing. Cotton is the summer choice, and the one for bags and items that should hold their shape.
Needles, hooks and accessories
Straight and circular needles, crochet hooks across the full size range, darning needles for jersey, stitch markers, tape measures and scissors.
Needle size is matched to the yarn — the recommended size is printed on every ball band. If you have lost the band, bring the yarn in and we will check together.
Felt
In sheets and by the metre, in dozens of colours. It does not fray at the edges, so it needs no hemming — which makes it an ideal material for working with children, Christmas decorations, soft toys and decorative details.
Embroidery floss
Six-strand thread for cross stitch and needlework, in a full colour range. The strands can be separated for a finer line — delicate designs usually use two or three.
We stock embroidery canvas in several counts alongside the floss.
What they are used for
- Jumpers, hats, scarves, gloves — the classics of knitting.
- Blankets and throws — chunky yarn on large needles works up quickly.
- Amigurumi and soft toys — cotton and a hook smaller than recommended, so the stitches stay tight.
- Bags and baskets — cotton cord and chunky yarns that hold their shape.
- Embroidery and children’s craft — floss, canvas, felt.
How to choose
- Start with the project, not the colour. The pattern tells you how much yarn and which weight you need.
- Buy the whole amount at once. Balls from different dye lots can differ in shade — on a jumper it shows.
- Knit a swatch. A 10×10 cm sample before the real work saves disappointment over sizing.
- For children choose acrylic or a blend. Wool can itch and often needs hand washing.
- Read the ball band. It gives the composition, the recommended needle size and washing instructions.
