Small haberdashery
This is the department people come to most often: a needle, a safety pin, a zip, a thimble, a piece of hook-and-loop. Cheap, unremarkable things — but no repair gets finished without them. At our shop in Galeria Krakowska they are all in one place.
Hand sewing needles
A full set of types: Sharps for general sewing, Chenille and Tapestry for embroidery and wool, Glovers for leather, Ball Point for jersey, plus darning needles.
The numbering works the opposite way to intuition — the higher the number, the finer the needle. Heavy fabric needs a lower number.
Zips
Concealed, open-ended and closed-ended, coil and moulded tooth, in many lengths and colours. For trousers, jackets, dresses, cushions and bags.
If you are replacing a zip, bring the old one or the garment itself — length and type have to match exactly, and guessing rarely works.
Safety pins, snaps and hooks
Safety pins in several sizes, press studs, skirt and bra hooks, belt fastenings. The small things that finish a job and decide whether a garment sits properly.
Bra components
Underwires, straps, cups, hooks and sliders — the small parts without which lingerie cannot be sewn or repaired. Useful when shortening straps, replacing a fastening or adjusting cups.
If you are altering a ready-made bra, bring it in — we will match the strap width and fastening type on the spot.
Sewing accessories
Thimbles, needle threaders, seam rippers, tailor’s chalk, tape measures, pins, scissors. The basic kit that comes in useful with every alteration.
What they are used for
- Home repairs — sewing on a button, replacing a zip, taking up a hem.
- Sewing from scratch — pins, chalk, tape measure, needles matched to the fabric.
- Embroidery and craft — Chenille and Tapestry needles, thimbles, threaders.
- Children’s clothing — press studs, safety pins and hook-and-loop instead of buttons.
How to choose
- Match the needle to the fabric, not the thread. Jersey needs a rounded tip (Ball Point) — a sharp one cuts the loops.
- Leather needs a triangular point. An ordinary needle will not pass through, or will snap.
- Measure a zip along the teeth. The stated length refers to the toothed section, not the whole tape.
- Concealed zips for dresses. Less visible, but they need a special machine foot.
- Buy a set of needles. The price difference is small and having spares pays off.
