Elastics, cords and leather thonging
Elastics, cords and thonging are the small things without which many projects cannot be finished — from an elasticated skirt waistband to a hoodie drawstring. We sell them by the metre, in a dozen or so widths and weaves.
Dressmaking elastic
Flat elastic for waistbands, cuffs and hems — in widths from a few millimetres to several centimetres. Narrower for lingerie and trims, wider for skirts, joggers and maternity bands.
We also stock knitted elastic, which tolerates being pierced by a needle better, and woven elastic — firmer and more durable, for everyday clothing.
Round and hat elastic
Fine round elastic for face masks, hair accessories and small fastenings, plus stronger elastic for covers and fixings.
A separate category is braided elastic, used in hats, in finishing work and in leather goods.
Cords
Cotton, polyester and blended, in many thicknesses and colours. Used as drawstrings in hoodies and joggers, ties on bags and finishes on sportswear.
Thicker cotton cords work well in craft — for macramé, crocheted bags and baskets, and for decoration.
Leather thonging
Leather and leather-look thonging, round and flat, in several widths and colours. Most often bought for jewellery — necklaces, bracelets, pendants — and for leather goods and small repairs.
What they are used for
- Waistband finishing — elastic threaded through a casing or stitched directly.
- Cuffs and hems — narrow elastic gathering jersey.
- Drawstrings and ties — cord in a hood, in joggers, in a drawstring bag.
- Jewellery — thonging as the base for necklaces and bracelets.
- Craft — macramé, crochet with cord, decorations.
How to choose
- Measure elastic under tension. Cut it 3–5 cm shorter than the waist measurement — it should pull in, not sit loose.
- Match width to purpose. 5–10 mm for lingerie, 25–40 mm for a skirt, up to 50 mm for a jogger waistband.
- Choose knitted elastic for stitching through. Woven elastic loses its spring once pierced.
- Cotton cord shrinks. If the item will be washed, wash the cord before sewing it in.
- Test thonging by bending it. Cheap leather substitutes can crack on a sharp fold.
